Hosting

There are opportunities for students who are staying in Sheffield over the festive period to meet British people and learn about British culture through the hosting activities described below:

Hosting at the University of Sheffield

Running alongside the Christmas Project is the launch of an exciting hosting initiative at The University of Sheffield. University staff and students are invited to volunteer a couple of hours of their time to show our international students Sheffield and the local area at Christmas. Below are a few ideas you could do with your assigned partner:

  • Visit a Christmas market
  • Attend a traditional carol service
  • Share a festive meal

If you are interested in becoming a host or a guest please complete the form at www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/christmas/signup.html

Students wishing to act as hosts can use their experience as part of the Sheffield Graduate Award under the "Extending International Horizons" criteria. To find out more visit www.sheffield.ac.uk/thesheffieldgraduateaward

Hosting at Sheffield Hallam University

The Local Friends scheme gives international students an opportunity to meet with local people from Sheffield for an experience of British culture. This could involve a visit to your host’s favourite place in Sheffield, a trip for coffee or a visit to their home.

Previous students have said:

"It was a wonderful experience. We were welcomed by the entire family (especially the children) and treated like royalty throughout our visit"

"It's wonderful getting to know the locals. I had fun getting to know the British cultures in more depth and it was truly a heart warming experience. Don't miss it!"

To apply for the Local Friends scheme simply email localfriends@shu.ac.uk and request an application form.
